Type Locality and Naming

Alozai Gr. – lower formation. Holotype section: Spingwar, 35 km NW of Loralai. Author: M. D.Williams, 1959. Reference section: None.


Lithology and Thickness

Clayey limestone. It consists of interbedded dark grey to black limestone and calcareous shales. The limestone is finely crystalline but in some areas, oolitic and shelly beds occur in the upper part, while sandstone beds are present in the lower part.

Thickness: 140-215 m. The formation is more than 665 m in the Zamari Tangi section, 215 m in the Mara Tangi and 140 m in Tazi Kach sections.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably underlain by Wulagai Fm (transitional).

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by Loralai Fm (transitional).

Regional extent

The formation is widely exposed along a long strip in the northeastern Balochistan between Loralai and Zhob Valley (Axial Belt). [This seems to be the Sulaiman Province = southern Indus Basin?]
